Resources for Freshers
Coming to uni can seem like a challenge, but the English Department and the Falstaff Society will welcome you with open arms. Below are a few pieces of information that might be helpful to you as a Fresher, but make sure to check out the info for Current Students too!

Places to know around campus

Here area few places which you'll get to know well over the course of your degree!

-
3/5 Woodland Road: this is where the English Department is based, and unfortunately it's all the way at the end of Woodland Road! Once you've made it to the building, it can seem even harder to navigate inside, but don't be afraid to as the Porters or anyone else you might see inside for directions - Second and Third Years still get lost in 3/5!
-
the ASS: the Arts and Social Sciences Library, better known as the ASS, is the massive concrete building on the end of Tyndall Avenue. All of the books for English can be found on the second floor so you'll have to get used to the slog up the stairs. All of the staff in the library are super helpful, so don't be afraid to ask them for help.
-
the Physics Building: you might think that this is a strange one for English Students to have to know, but many of your lectures will take place in here. The Powell Lecture Theatre can be accessed from the front of the Physics Building and the Tyndall Lecture Theatre can be accessed from the back.
-
the Chemistry Building: again, seems a strange one, but you're likely to have lectures here too. Remember to bring your UCard as the porters can be strict here.

Where to buy books

Books can get expensive, so it's great to check out Amazon (especially the second hand part), as well as having a look in one of the many Oxfam books around Bristol. We also have a marketplace linked to our facebook page for second and third years to sell their books on.

Who to talk to

Your first port of call should always be your Personal Tutor, but you can also talk to a Senior Tutor or the Deputy Head of Department for any academic issues you may have. The President and all the rest of the Falstaff Committee are always happy to answer questions, as are your Falstaff Parents.
